By popular demand!

I’ve traveled all over the U.S. and Canada teaching and one of the most frequent requests I get is to teach classes on the techniques I’ve developed for binding my quilted projects. As I write this, I’m on my home from the Iowa State Fair where I spent 11 days teaching and judging several of the Fabric and Threads Department competitions. Of the 11 classes I taught, four were my “Blue Ribbon Binding” classes, covering my methods for straight grain and bias quilt binding. They were all full of anxious-to-learn quilters.

Its funny that so many quilters consider me an expert on the subject when I spent years just “getting by” with my questionable binding skills. It wasn’t until I realized how much time and energy I was putting into my quilts, compared to the mediocre job I was doing finishing them, that I realized I needed to be just as good at binding as I was at the rest of the aspects of creating my quilts.

I began paying more attention to my bindings, tearing them off and starting again if I wasn’t happy with the accuracy of the application, the mitered corners or the way I had stitched them to the back of the quilt, by hand. I came up with my own technique for creating lump-free, perfectly mitered corners that was easy to teach so I began sharing that in my classes. I can’t believe how it spread like wildfire through the quilting community. I was hearing quilters talking in classes about how they now felt they could do bindings to be proud of or that they finally had the confidence to enter their quilts in competitions.

I was presented with an opportunity to create an online video course in which I could share all of my successful quilt binding techniques with quilters who haven’t had the opportunity to attend my classes. I thought this was a great idea because I really do feel I have a lot to share with quilters who struggle with this elementary part of quilting that can bring a beautiful quilt down a few notches if it’s not done well.

After much hard work and preparations, not to mention a trip to Golden, CO and a lot of time in front of the cameras, my “Quilt Binding Basics with Patrick Lose” online video course at Craft Online University is now available for registrations.

I don’t mind saying that I’m really proud of this one. All of the things I’ve been asked to teach in quilt shop classes or at guild events is now available, in one easy-to-follow video course, for you to download and study at your convenience. During the run of the course, I’m available to answer your questions and help you along the way with your progress.

In this course, I'll teach you how to:
        - choose binding fabric
        - match fabric patterns, such as stripes, when joining strips
        - determine the grain of cut fabric
        - determine whether you should use straight grain or bias binding
        - cut and prepare your binding
        - bind using straight grain binding, creating perfectly-mitered corners
        - create lump-free binding corners
        - economically cut continuous bias binding strips
        - bind curved and round pieces
        - bind pieces with scalloped or irregular edges
        - hand stitch bindings to the wrong side of the quilt

So I hope you’ll take a look at the video sample and course description here and register today to join me for “Quilt Binding Basics with Patrick Lose”. You owe it to yourself and to your quilts!

Cheers~
Patrick

    1. I'd be happy too, Susan. The guild would need to make a proposal and my schedule's an absolute train wreck, but maybe someday soon :) It would be nice to meet you! Cheers
